This project explores the acoustic properties of wood and its ability to produce sound through craftsmanship and design.
The moment I discovered wooden tongue drums, I was fascinated by the simplicity of their construction and the richness of the sounds they could create. I knew I had to challenge myself to build one. More than the creation of a musical instrument, this project represents part of my personal journey as a designer and artist, combining my passion for making with my growing interest in music.
Wooden tongue drums are melodic percussion instruments, carefully tuned to a specific scale, allowing anyone to create harmonious sounds regardless of their musical background. The design was developed with accessibility and playfulness in mind. Its form is comfortable to hold, making it suitable for both children and adults. The instrument encourages experimentation and provides an intuitive introduction to music through touch, rhythm, and sound.
Throughout the making process, I explored how different wood species, thicknesses, and surface treatments influence the instrument's tonal qualities. Each variation produces a unique sound, revealing the endless possibilities that emerge from the relationship between material and craft.
This project marks the beginning of an ongoing exploration into sound, woodworking, and design, where creativity and craftsmanship come together to create meaningful and joyful experiences.
